Training for Intervention ProcedureS

From "My Brother's Keeper", Kappa Sigma realized the need to even further improve its alcohol education to undergraduate men, therefore leading us to TIPS programming. TIPS is designed to teach servers, sellers, and consumers of alcohol to prevent intoxication, drunk driving, and underage drinking. The program has been around since the early 80's and is widely used not only on college campuses but throughout restaurants, workplaces, and casinos.

Specifically for Kappa Sigma, TIPS helps to prepare our brothers and pledges with the skills and confidence to handle situations where alcohol is consumed; and teach them to intervene effectively to prevent peers from harming themselves or others.

TIPS for the chapter typically takes 3 hours and is coordinated by a certified trainer. A chapter becomes TIPS certified when 75-100% of the chapter is in attendance for the program presentation. Further details of the TIPS programming can be found on the TIPS website.

You can also find specific information on alcohol laws and regulations for your state by applying for a free username and password on the site.

All colonies of Kappa Sigma starting after August 2002 are required to undergo the training process as well as chapters that violate Kappa Sigma's Code of Conduct deemed by the Supreme Executive Committee.

If you would like to take the noteworthy steps to schedule the TIPS programming for your chapter, you can find the contact information for the trainers here.

Any questions regarding TIPS should be directed to the Director of Membership Development.

Since 2000, the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund has approved grants totaling nearly $50,000 to support the work of the Kappa Sigma Alcohol/Drug Education Commission, specifically the implementation of TIPS programming.
