The Honorable Robert J. Dole a 1942 initiate of the Gamma-Omicron Chapter at the University of Kansas will be awarded one of the highest civilian honors, the Congressional Gold Medal today January 17th, 2018. All 100 U.S. Senators cosponsored the bill nominating Dole on August 3, was approved by the House on September 5, and signed by the President on September 15.
George Washington, Walt Disney, and Harry S. Truman have previously received the award.
Dole, who is now 94 played basketball at the University of Kansas before being deployed to the European theater in World War II. He received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star with an oak cluster for his wartime service. He served 27 years in the Senate, 10 years in the House, and was the GOP presidential nominee in 1996.
