Carter Via, a 1980 Initiate of the Delta-Omega Chapter at Wake Forest University, has proven that commitment to the Four Pillars extends far beyond the undergraduate experience. Brother Via has spent the better part of the last twenty years bettering the lives of children in the impoverished community of Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya.
As the Founder and Executive Director of the nonprofit organization Crossing Thresholds, Brother Via creates “opportunities where hope once seemed impossible”. Crossing Thresholds has invested in the future of Kibera, constructing schools, empowering local leadership, and distributing nutritious food to thousands of children.
Brother Via’s commitment to service has been exemplary, but this year, eight more Delta-Omega Brothers answered the call. “For a week, they made the Fraternity proud”.
Delta-Omega 1981 Initiate Fritz Healy; 1977 Initiate Kelly Wrenn; and 1978 Initiates Tom Azzarelli, Bill Baker, Danny Boyce, Dixon Dickens, Henry Fonvielle, and Robert Morgan joined Brother Via to work alongside wives and girlfriends, Kenyan craftsmen, and the Kibera community to build the Garden of Hope Junior School.
Collectively, the Kappa Sigma Brothers in Kenya pledged $250,000 to the school they built, and are challenging each other to double the pledge to $500,000 to establish the Crossing Thresholds Endowment Fund. The Endowment Fund would be designed to provide scholarships for students to attend universities and break the cycle of poverty that’s held a beautiful community down for far too long. Five-hundred children in Kibera can learn, eat, and thrive because of the hard work, generosity, and incredible zeal of nine Kappa Sigma Brothers working alongside their community to make the impossible possible.
